GABRIOLA ISLAND & AREA REPORT

On The Line  - June 20th, 2007 Report

By Bob Meyer - Silver Blue Charters

Chinook fishing has been mostly very good this past week. We hooked a dozen fish one trip, and 10 nice chinook on another. George Szanto caught the largest chinook of the year aboard the Silver Blue, a beautiful 28 pound fish. (This fish was of course caught while my purple rhodo was in full bloom, thus proving my obscure theory.) Thrasher, Grande to Whalebone, and Neck Point have been the spots to fish. Depths are mostly shallow, 77 to 135 feet. Rhys Davis tiny strip in green/chartreuse, Coyotes in black/white or green/white, the Kripple K spoon, or hoochies in green spackleback or Army Truck are the lures of choice. There are lots of undersized fish mixed in with the adults, which should be gently released.

Ling and rockfish are now open, with a one fish per person limit per day. Hatchery coho are open for retention starting July 1st.

Commercial prawning season should end this week. It will take about three weeks for the stocks to partially recover in local areas. Until then, I won’t be prawning.

GOOD FISHING!
