Latest Fishing Report: On the Line

By Bob Meyer - Silver Blue Charters
August 09, 2011

August 9th Gabriola fish report

Chinook fishing is productive for a wide range fo fish. Lots of release size 4 to 5 pounders, some jacks, some mid sized 10 to 15 pounders, and topped this week by Clyde Wicks 40 pounder. Grande to Whalebone, Orlebar to the Cannery, and The Fingers are all producing some nice fish. Depths are variable, 60 to 180 feet. Lures of note include the Rhys Davis teaser in UV chartreuese, Coyotes in glow green/silver or black and white, or the Kripple K spoon.
There are some coho and pink entering the area. The coho have been taken off the Whalebone area at 60 to 80 feet. The pinks are off Porlier and the Millsteam in Nanaimo.
Ling fishing is terrific off Thrasher and the Flat Tops. Try large bait, jigs, or plastics in 20 to 60 feet of water for best results.
Prawning is great off the Flat Tops. Expect 100 plus per trap. Try tuna cat food fished at 350 feet.
Good fishing!
